Name: HEROINE or MAI (either of these works)
Canon: AMNESIA: Memories
Gender: FEMALE
Age: 19
History: Wiki A Rough Fan Translation - Ukyo's route specifically
Personality: Mai can be described by several adjectives: stubborn, brave, proactive, and trusting. She is described this way because of her interactions in the anime and game counterparts of Amnesia. Because Mai is a silent protagonist in the game, it is harder to get a read on who she is without Orion's without transferring much of Orion's "voice" onto Mai's when he speaks/acts on Mai's behalf but in the anime this differs drastically. In the anime Mai is shown more visually and verbally with different cues. When we first meet her in the anime, Mai has already gone through several world jumps already before she faints from the impact of repeated jumping and losing her memories again. Orion's introduction startles her into nearly screaming out and she does not have the pieces put together until later on.
In the anime, she goes through several world jumps without Orion seeming to guide her before finally settling into the current world state she finds herself in, at the start. She has no memories of anything prior to this and has only Orion's insistence that they know one another to go on. (He says that they have known each other at least four days but that she does not remember)
Walking home with Toma and Shin proves to further confuse her as she has no idea who they are and yet they are incredibly friendly with her. She expresses frustration and disappointment in not knowing them and not realizing who they are to her, despite Orion's reassurances that they will get her memories back. She also does not blame Orion for bumping into her soul and causing this lapse in her memories. In the game, Mai's relationships are more loosely divided by the different routes but for simplicity the main focus will be upon Ukyo's, as the canon point I have chosen is from this point of reference.
Mai spends much of her time with Orion, trying to piece bits of herself together and learning about the situation they are in as she goes. She learns that she studies psychology, was in a band before her memory loss as a vocalist, and that she had a dog named Kuro. This information is all dependent on which route one plays from, however. The consistent thing is her cellphone (and contacts or lack of contacts), her day planner (marked with a trip to Kobe in Ukyo's route), her diary, and her apartment's layout as a whole. Mai is inferred to be good with money and highly independent as she lives alone and attends college. She works a lot of hours at Meido no Hitsuji (a maid cafe) each week and rarely takes time off unless scheduled. This could be due to her wanting to save up quickly to meet Ukyo in Kobe again.
Mai's relationship with Ukyo remains a confusing thing for much of Ukyo's route. He tends to pop up at opportune moments to help her in the anime and both canons remain consistent in dodging her questions about their relationship or the fact that he's jumped from world to world for her. Mai does not receive any concret information until she finally confronts him on her own. This behavior showcases just how intuitive Mai is although she is partially aided whenever her memories return.
Ukyo is also someone that Mai can be straightforward with though she makes the mistake of telling Ukyo about Orion in her canon point which results in her death. This shows how trusting she can be, despite warnings he gives her not to trust him and to keep her distance from him. His alter ego, even though he states that he loves her, tries his best to kill her in every single world they visit. Mai still chooses to trust Ukyo and to love him despite this alter ego. She accepts both of them and admits to him that she loves both of them.
In the anime, Mai and Orion try their best to piece together different memories each time she jumps to a different world. Mai is aware of each world, realizing that each one brings her to different situations with the men in her life. This starts with Shin, as Mai becomes confused and frightened by him when he makes advances on her and then tells her that his father killed someone, though her memories confuse her into thinking he killed someone in the anime once part of her memory returns. Shin's bluntness is also something that made her cry when they were children, though this is only touched upon in his route and not the anime or Ukyo's. Mai is friendly with Shin, viewing him as a dear friend. The two seem to instinctively know one another's moods and mannerisms. Shin comments in both the anime and the game that Mai is unusually quiet and acting strange and in the game, in his route, he even tests her on it and pushes her to remember her affections for him. In the anime Mai bluntly rejects his advances, which disappoint him but he is willing to accept them - resulting in some emotional withdrawal on his part. Shin also tends to compete with Toma, in the anime and Ukyo's route, for her attention. He is annoyed by Toma treating the both of them as if they are children and verbalizes this annoyance on several occasions, much to Mai's confusion. Shin and Toma are similar in age to her, along with Sawa and Mine, who is younger. They all work together at Meido no Hitsuji, along with Ikki and Kent.
The group as a whole works cohesively though depending on the route, Mai's relationship with Mine varies as well as that of which of the boys she is dating. In Toma's route of the anime and the game, he locks her in a cage for her protection from fangirls and Mine is rather cold to her in this and Ikki's route. Though Mai works cohesively with the boys, she has remarked previously, before her memory loss, about Ikki's flirting with girls - including herself - to be irritating. This is more touched upon in Ikki's route of the game and his route's episodes of the anime and should be noted that Mai does not have such an exchange with him in her canon point in the game. It is however another solid example of her opinionated views.
Mai's interactions with Kent are very minimized in the anime and reduced only to her memory of the festival they attend, with the game elaborating more on her stubbornness as she is unwilling to sit idly while he treats her with distance as he is unsure how to approach a romantic relationship and is viewing it logically. She will also not remember her reactions to him from his route save for those glossed over in Ukyo's and in the anime.
As for Toma, Mai's relationship with him is generally the same across the board - he is the protective older brother. She does not view him romantically in Ukyo's route but it is painfully obvious of his obsession with her as he has his own bad end in the route where he is implied to have killed Ikki fan girls for harassing her and then locks her in his apartment. Luckily this only takes place if Mai tells him about the harassment and she does not, in her canon point.

Sample: "I loved you from the bottom of my heart"
Mai distantly felt the shock to her system and heard Orion's cries for her to wake up. She didn't know what was to come. In her slumber, her body did not move, providing no resistance to Ukyo's actions. She could hear his voice, clear as a bell while it mocked her.
"I told you not to let your guard down in front of me!" He spoke with a cold confidence to him, something that would have sent chills down her spine had she been aware of him beyond this dreamlike state she was trapped in. It was as if she was having an out of body experience. She wanted to cry out, like Orion was doing in her head.
Ukyo...stop-!!
Why was he doing this? Yes, he had told her so many times he was dangerous and had even proven it time and again and yet somehow those memories of him, those small moments she wanted to polish like a jewel, kept rushing back piece by piece. Mai didn't want to leave him alone. The part of him that wasn't like this - that didn't want to hurt her - truly loved her. It was obvious he felt alone, just from each time he would find himself somewhere else, somewhere that she didn't know him.
She could still remember clearly, the first reintroduction that she could remember. He'd greeted her with familiarity and she'd only ever been confused by him. She was confused now. Where had she gone wrong? Even if she wanted to struggle, she couldn't now. He still had the stun gun and would probably just shock her again.
Orion's pleas echoed in her head and Mai wished more than anything that she could move. Ukyo hovered near her, smiling that same maniacal smile. It was no use. He'd wanted so badly for her to live and yet he was the one who would kill her in the end, wasn't he?
"Oh, let me tell you one last thing. Both me and the other me... We both love you from the bottom of our hearts." He spoke with a finality. Mai could feel it like a caress. She wanted to stop him, to tell him he didn't have to do this and yet in the end she felt herself fading when he killed her, like being lost in a fog.
Ukyo....
Death came quickly and the finality of it was more lasting than the warm feeling she recalled from holding his hand, from seeing his sleeping face in the park. That warmth flitted away like a bird, bringing only emptiness when Ukyo killed her. She had wanted to do more, to tell him to stop, but it hadn't happened. Would he be upset with himself later? Mai wished she could be there for him, to erase the guilt. He hadn't wanted this. The other part of him had only wanted to live and if that meant she had to die, she would accept it.
Mindset: By Mai's canon point she is aware of the existence of multiple worlds, as far as Ukyo has explained to her at least. In the anime and for the sake of Monad it is safe to assume she's realized the world jumping on her own as well. She's aware that he's tried over and over to find a world where she can live happily and smile. It wouldn't feel like a stretch to her that they got separated again. It would be scary not having Orion by her side but she would push through it and find answers. She accepts the fact that Ukyo has killed her multiple times so it will be interesting to see what happens when Glitches try to kill her this time around.
G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡: Mai hasseen some shit been through quite a bit from route to route. In Toma's route she is either pushed in a well or trapped in a cage (the bad end sees her turning into a living doll, devoid of her memories). In Ikki's route, his crazy fangirls kill her. In Kent's Ukyo drops her off the roof of a hospital. Ukyo's route has several various ways in which he kills her - though from her canon point let's go with the stun gun death for now.
Generally Mai is not a person easily scared but she has been bullied by fangirls, threatened/intimidated by her boyfriend(s) goddamn it Toma and generally treated rather harshly. As an amnesiac she has little memory of what is real and what is not, though she has bits and pieces gleaned along the way in Ukyo's route.
Because Mai tends to be passive because of the state she is in, she tends to put up with a lot of not so great stuff from various people from route to route. Basically take your pick? The Anime has some nice glossed over bits for inspiration. What Mai probably fears the most is hospitals because of the risk that she will lose her memories again and start from scratch and the fear that others will take advantage of her state. Mai is also afraid of disappointing others which is why when it does come up that her memories are gone, she feels bad for it.
